21 December

Philippa Dunphy and Wayne Butson have been appointed to the board of ACC.

Dunphy has worked in financial services for more than 20 years and Butson is an industrial relations specialist.

Mike Underhill was today appointed as Chief Executive of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).
Mr Underhill is currently the Chief Executive of WEL Networks, the Waikato-based electricity distribution company. He has spent more than 35 years in the gas and electricity sectors in New Zealand and overseas.

20 December

Economic Development Minister Trevor Mallard and Acting Trade Minister Annette King today announced appointments to the NZTE board.

Peter Conway has been appointed a new member whilst chairman Phil Lough and board members Craig Ellison and Peter Menzies have been re-appointed.

Peter Conway is currently Economist and Director of Policy with the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions. His experience includes providing advice on the World Trade Organisation and other trade issues, including Thailand, P4, ASEAN, the China FTA and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. He also has experience in the areas of climate change, economic development, industry training, and industry plans.

Commerce Minister Lianne Dalziel today announced the several appointments to the Takeovers Panel.

David Jones, currently the deputy chair of the Panel, will become chair from 8 March 2007 to 7 March 2011. He will replace the inaugural chair John King.
Alastair Lawrence will replace David Jones, as the deputy chair of the Panel from 8 March 2007 to 24 September 2008.

The following new members have been appointed for a five year term:
John Waller has in-depth commercial experience. He heads the PricewaterhouseCoopers Advisory Division and is also a member of the PricewaterhouseCoopers New Zealand board.
Keith Taylor has considerable corporate experience, including his position of chief executive with Tower.
Pip Greenwood a partner at Russell McVeagh specialises in securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions, takeovers and general corporate advisory work. She is also a member of the firm’s board of management.

19 December

Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced today, that Former Trade Negotiations Minister Philip Burdon has been appointed Chair of the Asia:NZ Foundation.

Mr Burdon replaces Sir Dryden Spring, who stands down after five years as Chair. Mr Peters paid tribute to the long service of Sir Dryden, who first joined the Asia:NZ Board in 1996, and thanked outgoing members of the current Board.

New appointments to the Asia:NZ Board are:
Rob McLeod, NZ Business Roundtable Chairman;
Mai Chen, Chen Palmer Barristers and Solicitors;
Gavin Ellis, former editor of the New Zealand Herald;
Richard Nottage, former Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade.


Four Board members, whose current terms have expired, have been reappointedare: Ken Douglas, Lex Henry, Vino Ramayah, and MP Pansy Wong.

The State Services Commissioner, Mark Prebble, announced today that Dr Graham Stoop has been appointed as Chief Executive and Chief Review Officer, Education Review Office.

Dr Stoop is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Christchurch College of Education and has extensive experience in education administration and in curriculum development at local and national levels. He is a member of the New Zealand and Commonwealth Councils for Educational Administration and is currently on the Board of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

His appointment will be effective in the new year.

14 December

Commerce Minister Lianne Dalziel today announced the appointment of John Holland as a member of the Securities Commission.

Mr Holland is currently a commercial partner for law firm Chapman Tripp, specialising in corporate and commercial law with a particular interest in securities. His current practice involves advising many leading South Island corporate companies on corporate governance and securities law issues. He has previous governance experience as a board member of Chapman Tripp, a director of Kathmandu Group Limited, and chair of a securitisation company.

Mr Holland commences his term on 1 January 2007 and replaces Lloyd Kavanagh.

11 December

The New Zealand Superannuation Fund has appointed Anne-Maree O‘Connor as head of responsible investment.  She was previously Managing Director of CoreRatings, a European rating agency.

6 December

Jan Wright will be the next Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment.Speaker Margaret Wilson says a motion endorsing the policy analyst and consultant’s appointment will be put before the House this week.

Dr Wright is chairwoman of Land Transport New Zealand and a director of ACC and Transit New Zealand.

Lawyer Patricia McConnell has been appointed chief adjudicator of the Weathertight Homes Resolution Service.

Building Issues Minister Clayton Cosgrove said Ms McConnell, a Rotorua-based barrister, had established an excellent reputation as principal tenancy adjudicator with the Tenancy Tribunal.

She replaces Paul Skinner.

Associate Health Minister Damien O'Connor has announced the appointment of three new members of the Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand.

They are: Chairman Peter Glensor (Chair of the Hutt Valley District Health Board), Alick Shaw (Deputy-Mayor of Wellington) and Robyn Northey (former dental nurse and social worker now working in the health and not-for-profit sector).

They replace outgoing chairman Prof Andrew Hornblow and members Monica Stockdale and Dr Gillian Tasker.

The Chair of the Board of the HRC, Emeritus Professor Graeme Fraser today announced the appointment of Dr Robin Olds as Chief Executive of the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC). 

Dr Olds will replace Dr Bruce Scoggins, who leaves the HRC at the end of December 2006.

Dr Olds is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology, Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago. Prior to this he has held a number of positions, including a Nuffield Dominions Fellowship at Oxford University and a Research Fellowship at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford University.

5 December

Broadcasting Minister Steve Maharey today announced the appointment
of Neil Walter and Rhonda Kite to the NZ On Air Board. Neil replaces retiring Chair Don Hunn.

Neil Walter is a former Secretary of Foreign Affairs, is currently Chair of the Environmental Risk Management Authority, and a member of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Biosecurity. He has served as Director on a number of Boards, and is an Honorary Fellow of the School of Government at Victoria University.

Neil has been appointed as a Board member and Chair-designate for a three-year term from 1 December 2006, becoming Chair on 1 January 2007.  

Rhonda Kite was awarded the Maori Business Woman of the Year in 2001/2002. She is an experienced and award-winning television and film producer. Rhonda is currently on the Screen Production and Development Association, and Women in Film and Television Executive's. Her appointment is until 1 January 2010.

28 November

National Party Leader John Key is pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Taylor as Chief Press Secretary.

Mr Taylor, a former New Zealand Herald political and business reporter, has been Senior Press Secretary in the Leader's Office since January. His appointment is effective immediately.

27 November

The Civil Aviation Authority has appointed Russell Kilvington as its interim director to take over from John Jones who will be retiring at the end of November. His appointment will be effective from 1st of December.

Mr Kilvington has been the Chief Executive and Director of Maritime New Zealand for the past 13 years.

14 November

The State Services Commissioner, Mark Prebble, announced today that Alastair Morrison has been appointed as Chief Executive and Director-General, Department of Conservation.

Mr Morrison’s various roles within the department include General Manager, External Relations from 2002; in 2005 he took on the role of General Manager, Strategy and Policy until was appointed Acting Chief Executive.

Prior to joining the department he had a long career in journalism, in reporting, commentary and several management roles. From 1997 to 2002 Mr Morrison was Political Editor, Radio New Zealand and managed press gallery staff.

His appointment is effective immediately.

2 November

The OECD has appointed Mr Butler as Head of Taxation Administration and Consumption Tax, based in Paris.

Finance Minister Michael Cullen today welcomed the appointment of Inland Revenue chief executive David Butler to a key position in the OECD.

Mr Butler was appointed head of IRD in 2001 after a 25-year tax career in Australia and was recently re-appointed for another five-year term. He has contributed to a number of government’s key reforms, assisted in introducing various schemes, worked on the current Business Tax review and proposed changes to investment tax rules.

27 October

Attorney-General Michael Cullen announced today that Dunedin lawyer Michael Ray Radford has been appointed a District Court Judge. He will be sworn in on 31 October and sit in Wellington.

After becaming a partner of Gallaway Son & Chettleburgh in Dunedin, Mr Radford left to practise on his own account in 1980. He joined Aspinall Joel & Co in Dunedin in 1985, and recently became Principal, with seven staff solicitors, of his firm Aspinall Joel Radford Bowler.

Mr Radford's practice has been in litigation, equally divided between criminal and civil, whilst his non-litigation work involves trust and commercial work. He has been actively involved with various district law societies; the legal aid board and the Otago legal aid committee; NZ Law Society Ethics Committee and was a former District Inspector under the Mental Health CAT Act.

25 October

National Party President Judy Kirk has today named Chris Simpson as the Party’s new General Manager.

Well known in Party circles, Mr Simpson, 37, worked at the Party’s Headquarters in 1991 before joining National’s Research Unit.  He was the Unit’s Director from 1995 to 1997. Since then he has worked as National Director of the NZ Property Council and as a communications consultant. He starts on 20 November.

18 October

Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard today announced the appointment of Mike Spedding to the Maori Heritage Council of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

17 October

Defence Minister Phil Goff announced that Air Vice-Marshal David Bamfield has had his appointment as Vice Chief of Defence Force (VCDF) extended for a further 12 month period from February 2007.

11 October

The Minister of Transport, Annette King, has announced a number of appointments to Crown Entities in the transport sector.

Mr Rick Bettle has been appointed Chair of the Civil Aviation Authority.

Mr Bettle is currently president of the New Zealand Institute of Directors. "It is great to be able to attract a person of Rick Bettle's calibre for this important role in CAA. He has worked as a director in both the public and private sector and is an expert in governance issues. He is a company director with a broad range of experience in a diversity of significant economic sectors," says Ms King.

Four new members have been appointed to the Transit New Zealand board, with Wellington company director Bryan Jackson the new Deputy Chair, taking over from Sir Tipene O'Regan whose term expired at the end of September.

The other three new members are Grahame Hall, James Hill and Ernesto Henriod. Mr Jackson has been appointed for two years, and the other three members for three year terms.

Gary McIver, of Hastings, has been appointed to the Land Transport New Zealand Board for two years.

Three appointments have also been made to the board of Maritime New Zealand. Deputy Chair Dave Morgan and member Ken Gilligan have both been reappointed for three and two more years respectively, and a new appointee is management consultant Michael Ludbrook, appointed for three years.

5 October

The Housing New Zealand Corporation Board has appointed Dr Lesley McTurk to its Chief Executive position.
Dr McTurk is currently the CE of the Christchurch City Council and will be starting with the Corporation in the New Year.

27 September

Health Minister Pete Hodgson has announced new Chair and board member appointments at Wairarapa and Nelson Marlborough district health boards.

Bob Francis, the current Mayor of Masterton, will be the new Chair of the board of Wairarapa DHB from 28 November 2006. Ian MacLennan, a self-employed business service contractor, has been appointed to the board of Nelson Marlborough DHB from 1 October 2006

18 September

Commerce Minister Lianne Dalziel has announced the appointment of Dr Sharon Kletchko to the Standards Council and the re-appointment of Richard Westlake as a member and Chair of the Standards Council.

Dr Kletchko is a senior executive with the Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board and Richard Westlake has been a director on many state sector boards and is a governance and strategy consultant.

15 September

Charles Macek has been re-appointed as the Australian member of the New Zealand Accounting Standards Review Board (ASRB) from 11 September 2006 through to 10 December 2007. This aligns with Charles Macek’s term as Chair of the Australian Financial Reporting Council (FRC).

13 September

Police Commissioner Howard Broad has announced the appointment of new district commanders for North Shore Waitakere Rodney and Wellington.

The new District Commander for North Shore Waitakere Rodney will be Superintendent Viv Rickard. Superintendent Rickard is the current District Commander for Northland.

The new District Commander for Wellington will be Superintendent Pieri Munro. Superintendent Munro is currently the General Manager Maori, Pacific and Ethnic Services.

13 September

The Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard today announced a new appointment to the Board of Te Papa Tongarewa.

Dr John Henderson is Associate Professor in Political Science at the University of Canterbury and has been appointed for a three-year term from 15 September 2006.

1 September

The Minister responsible for Archives New Zealand Judith Tizard has announced the membership of the inaugural Archives Council. The members are: Richard Nottage, Theresa Graham, Rachel Lilburn, Ani Pahuru-Huriwai, Mel Smith, Dr Monty Soutar, Stuart Strachan.

The Council's role under recent Public Records legislation passed last year is to provide the Minister with advice on archives and recordkeeping issues. Council members' have been appointed for three-year terms.

31 August

State-owned Enterprise Minister Trevor Mallard and Energy Minister David Parker has announced new appointments to the Electricity Commission and the board of state-owned Transpower New Zealand Ltd.

Stan Rodger CMG has been appointed as a Commissioner of the Electricity Commission for a three year term. His replacement on the Transpower board will be Northland businessman and company director Wayne Brown.

The Minister responsible for the National Library Judith Tizard today announced three new appointments and a new Chair of the Library and Information Advisory Commission (LIAC).

IAC Commissioner, and Director of the NZ Broadcasting School at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, Brian Pauling, has been appointed as Chair.

New members appointed for three-year terms are:
Bill Macnaught, Manager of Puke Ariki, New Plymouth's museum, public library and visitor information centre.
Janet Copsey, Librarian at the University of Auckland.
Paul Thompson, former Director of the Museum of Wellington City and Sea.

Aucklanders Evelyn Tobin and Paul Reynolds have been reappointed for a further two years.

16 August

Education Minister Steve Maharey has announced the appointment of a new chair and two new board members, and the reappointment of one board member, to the Careers Services board.

Kaye Turner has been appointed Chair of the Board (commencing 1 September). Ms Turner replaces Trish McKelvy who has retired as Chair of the board.

Brent Kennerley has been appointed as Deputy Chair and Arthur Graves and Dr Majolein Lips-Wiersmaas have been appointed as members of the board of the board until July 2009.

7 August

Attorney-General, Dr Michael Cullen, announced today the appointment of Dr David Collins QC as Solicitor-General and chief executive of the Crown Law Office.

His appointment follows the resignation of Terence Arnold QC who became a Judge of the High Court and Court of Appeal in May. Dr Collins’ appointment will take effect on 1 September 2006.

7 August

ASURE New Zealand Ltd has announced the appointment of Kelvan Smith as Chief Executive.

2 August

Picton barrister Brian Dwyer has been appointed an Environment Judge.

Chair Dame Anne Salmond and five members have been reappointed to the Historic Places Trust Board.

Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard today announced the appointment of two new members and the re-appointment of four members to the Board of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO).

The two new members are:
Mark Barrow (Auckland), and
Roger Taylor (Wellington)

Both new members have been appointed for three-year terms until 30 June 2009.

31 July

Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard announced the appointment of one new member and the reappointment of an existing member to the Mâori Heritage Council of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

The new member, Rima Edwards of Kaitaia, has chaired Te Rûnanga o Muriwhenua for 18 years, and has been a member of the Tai Tokerau Mâori Trust Board since 2001.Waaka Vercoe of Whakatane, is being reappointed for a further term.

Both have been appointed for three-year terms from 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2009

20 July

Karen Sewell has been appointed as Chief Executive and Secretary for Education, Ministry of Education. Karen Sewell is presently the Chief Executive and Chief Review Officer for the Education Review Office, a position she has held since 2001.

Her appointment will be effective upon the departure of the current Chief Executive in November.

A leading advocate of Maori in education has been appointed to head the Correspondence School. Mike Hollings has worked in a range of roles in education and the public service, including being the acting chief executive of the Education Review Office for the past year. He says his goals will be improving student achievement, raising staff capability and making sure the institution which services more than 16,000 students remains financially sound.

19 July

Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard today announced the appointment of a new chair and trustees to the Te Mâori Manaaki Taonga Trust Board.

The new chair will be Piri Sciascia, Pro Vice-Chancellor Mâori at Victoria University of Wellington.
New trustee Paul Tapsell is currently Director Mâori of the Auckland War Memorial Museum and a lecturer at Auckland University.
Te Aue Davis and Ngahiraka Mason have both been reappointed.

All members are being appointed for terms of three years from 1 July 2006.

The Minister especially acknowledged the longstanding commitment of the outgoing Chair, Professor Hirini Mead, who was instrumental in the establishment of the Trust and has led it since 1991.

18 July

Research, Science and Technology Minister, Steve Maharey today announced three new appointments to the Board of the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, the main government funding body for science and technology.

They are:
Paul Tocker, Chief Executive of Crop & Food;
Dr Diana Hill, Chief Executive and Director of quality assurance company Global Technologies;
Dr Bronwen Connor, head of the Neural Repair and Neurogenesis Laboratory and senior lecturer at Auckland University.

They replace retiring Board members Dr Andrew (Andy) Pearce, Professor Thomas (Tom) Barnes and Dr Grant Ryan. The appointments are for three year terms effective from 13 July.

7 July

Defence Minister Phil Goff has announced the establishment of a new Defence Attaché position in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  Brigadier Neville Reilly will take up the position this month.

The new High Commissioner to Australia will be senior diplomat John Larkindale.
Mr Larkindale is currently a deputy secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington. He was previously New Zealand’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation, and his earlier postings were London, Beijing, Apia, Washington and Vienna.
He replaces Kate Lackey, and takes up his appointment later this year.

Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard today announced a new Chair and four new appointments to the New Zealand Film Commission.
The new Chair is David Cullwick and the four new members are:
Vanessa Alexander (Auckland), Andrew Cornwell (Auckland), Wendy Palmer (Blenheim), Shane Simpson (Sydney), and Bill Birnie has been re-appointed to the Board for a further two-year term until 30 June 2008.

Associate Arts Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard today announced two new appointments to the Board of Te Waka Toi.
Darrin Haimona of Waharoa (Tainui), and Ranui Ngarimu of Christchurch (Ngâi Tahu)
Both have been appointed for three-year terms from 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2009.
Sandy Adsett of Hastings, Suzanne Ellison of Karitane and Dr Patu Hohepa of Auckland have been re-appointed for two-year terms from 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2008.

Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Hon Judith Tizard today announced the appointment of three new members to the Arts Board of Creative New Zealand.

Kate De Goldi,
Michael Prentice and
Pele Walker have been appointed to the Board for three-year terms from 1 July this year to 30 June 2009.

5 July

Jillian Maree Mallon has been appointed a Judge of the High Court.
Justice Mallon joined the firm of Bell Gully in Wellington in 1988 becoming a partner in 1998. Her principal areas of practice were commercial litigation, competition, media and public law. Justice Mallon has also taught competition law at Victoria University for a number of years where she is an Honorary Fellow.

The Minister of Maori Affairs, Hon Parekura Horomia today announced the appointment of Peter Brown and Sir Paul Reeves to the Waitangi Tribunal.

Peter Brown has been involved with many social development areas including employment, youth at risk, family care and protection, and integrating social justice and ecological perspectives.
Sir Paul Reeves is a former Governor General of New Zealand.

Their appointments are for a term of three years each.

4 July

Pamela Jean Andrews has been appointed a Judge of the High Court, to sit in Auckland.
Justice Andrews has been a part time member of the Refugee Status Appeals Authority since 2003. She has practised extensively in insolvency, professional regulation and general commercial and property litigation and is co-author of the Brookers publication, Civil Litigation Practice and Procedure.

Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard today announced three new appointments and two reappointments to the Board of Te Papa Tongarewa.

New member John Allen (Wellington) is currently CEO of New Zealand Post and has an extensive legal background.
Bob Harvey (Waitakere City), has been Mayor of Waitakere City since 1992. A former deputy Chair of the New Zealand Film Commission, Mr Harvey has been extensively involved in developing the "Eco-City" concept and other pioneering work in local government.
Lorraine Wilson (Auckland), is a consultant to the cultural sector. Her governance experience includes roles as a councillor on the Auckland Regional Authority and the Auckland City Council, in museum bodies and in not-for-profit organisations.

All three new members have been appointed for three-year terms from 1 July 2006.

Board member Glenys Coughlan (Wellington), who is being reappointed for a two-year term.Mark Solomon (Christchurch) will serve a further one-year term on the Board.

 

15 June

The State Services Commissioner, Mark Prebble, has announced the appointment of Stephen McKernan as Chief Executive and Director-General of the Ministry of Health.

Housing New Zealand Corporation Chief Executive Helen Fulcher has resigned. General Manager Ian Bourke has been appointed the acting Chief Executive of the Corporation for the transitional period.

The Prime Minister, and Minister in Charge of the Security Intelligence Service, Helen Clark has announced that Warren Tucker has been appointed the new Director of Security of the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service.

Justice Minister Mark Burton announced today that Rosslyn Noonan has been appointed to a second five-year term as Chief Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission.

9 May

Economic Development Minister Trevor Mallard and Trade Minister Phil Goff announced today the appointment of four new members to the board of government economic development agency New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.

The new board members are Peter Maire, Jane Hunter, Alan Isaac and Lorraine Witten. They join current members Phil Lough (chair), Craig Ellison and Peter Menzies.

8 May

Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Helen Clark today announced the appointment of four new chairs of cultural and heritage boards:
John Judge as Chair of Te Papa Tongarewa Board for a 3-year term
Diana Fenwick as Chair of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra for a 3-year term
Dr Ngahuia Te Awekotuku as Chair of Te Waka Toi Board for a 3-year term.
Christopher Doig as Chair of the Council of Creative New Zealand for a 3-year term.

4 May

The Attorney-General, the Hon Dr Michael Cullen, announced today the appointment of Terence Arnold QC as a Judge of the High Court and Court of Appeal.

Justice Arnold has a BA and two LLM degrees from Victoria University and New York University. Prior to working with a law firm, he taught criminal law at Victoria University and several Canadian universities. In 1985 he joined Chapman Tripp Sheffield Young and became a barrister sole in 1994. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed Queen's Counsel before becoming Solicitor-General in 2000.

Justice Arnold's appointment will take effect on 19 May 2006.

2 May

Services Commissioner, Mark Prebble, today announced the appointment of Hugh Logan as Chief Executive and Secretary for the Environment, Ministry for the Environment. He takes over from Sue Powell, who has been the Acting Chief Executive at the Ministry since March.

Mr Logan who is currently the Chief Executive and Director General of the Department of Conservation has had nine years' experience as a chief executive and 26 years' experience in the Public Service. His earlier career included roles at the Ministry of Civil Defence, the DSIR and the Prime Minister's Department.

Mr Logan will take up his appointment on 29 May 2006.

2 May

Attorney-General Michael Cullen announced today the appointment of Hamilton lawyer Lex de Jong as a Family Court Judge.

During his time with law firm McKinnon & Co in Hamilton, Mr de Jong was admitted to the bar in 1981 and then made a partner in 1984. He has been in sole practice since 2001.Mr de Jong will be sworn in on 18 May and will sit in Auckland.

Commerce Minister Lianne Dalziel today announced the re-appointment of John Albertson, Richard Gibbons, Ellen Ramsay and Carol Stigley to the Standards Council.

27 April

Acting Transport Minister Pete Hodgson today announced the appointment of members to the new Ministerial Advisory Group on Roading Costs.

The group has been formed to examine costs in the roading sector.
Clive Tilby will chair the group, which also includes Jo Brosnahan, Alan Isaac and Stuart McKenzie.

12 April

Rick Barker today announced appointments to the New Zealand Fire Service Commission.

Dame Margaret Bazley, of Wellington, has been reappointed as Chairperson to the Commission.
Terence Scott, of Oxford, North Canterbury, has been reappointed as Deputy Chairperson.
John Hercus, of Christchurch, has been reappointed as a member to the Commission.
All appointments are for a term of three years.

The three reappointed members join Piers Reid and Angela Foulkes on the Commission.

Attorney-General Michael Cullen announced today that Denis Kieran Clifford has been appointed a judge of the High Court.

After graduating from Victoria University of Wellington Justice Clifford joined law firm Buddle Anderson Kent & Co. In 1980 he took up the position of visiting fellow at the University of Illinois Law School, and worked both in NZ and overseas for various law firms.

Justice Clifford held the position of Legal Advisor, Policy and Legal in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet until joining the independent bar in 2002.

Justice Clifford has practiced extensively in commercial and public law and will sit in Wellington.

6 April

Health Minister Pete Hodgson today announced that Professor Linda Holloway is the new Chair of the National Health Committee.She has recently retired as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Health Sciences at Otago University and takes up her new position this month.

Professor Holloway has been a member of the National Health Committee since 2002. She replaces Dr Robert Logan who was a member of the National Health Committee for seven years and became chairman in 2000.

4 April

Prime Minister Helen Clark and Police Minister Annette King today announced the appointments of Howard Broad as Commissioner of Police and Rob Pope as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations). Lyn Provost has been appointed as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Resource Management). All appointments are for terms of five years.

3 April

The Queen has appointed Judge Anand Satyanand to succeed Dame Silvia Cartwright as Governor-General.

Judge Satyanand, replaces Dame Sylvia on 4 August. He is of Indo-Fijian heritage and will be the first New Zealand asian to hold the role.

TVNZ's Chairman Designate, Sir John Anderson, today announced the appointment of Mr Rick Ellis as Chief Executive, commencing in mid-May.

9 March

Education Minister Steve Maharey today announced appointments to the board of trustees of the Correspondence School.

New chair of the board will be Patricia McKelvey, and Roger Drummond as a new board member. Four current board members, Russell Ballard, Claire Hague, Polly Schaverien, Roger Taylor and former chair, Ian McKinnon, have been re-appointed for a further term.

Patricia McKelvy replaces Ian McKinnon, who will continue to serve on the board, but in a different role. He has several other responsibilities including City Councillor and has decided to reduce his time committment in some areas.

The appointments are for two years effective from 10 April 2006.

6 March

Prime Minister Helen Clark and Defence Minister Phil Goff announced several appointments for the NZ Defence Force;
Major General Jerry Mateparae will be the new chief, and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.

Major General Lou Gardiner to be Chief of Army, and Air Commodore Graham Lintott as Chief of Air Force, at the rank of Air Vice Marshal, to take over from Air Vice Marshal John Hamilton.

Major General Mateparae will serve in the position for three years from 1 May, replacing Air Marshal Bruce Ferguson, whose term is ending.

Rear Admiral David Ledson has had his term as Chief of Navy extended to 30 April 2009.

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority has announced that Dr Karen Poutasi will be its new chief executive.

Dr Poutasi is the current Director-General of Health. She holds Otago University and Harvard University management qualifications. She has also held a Harkness Fellowship and is on the New Zealand appointments committee for Harkness Fellowships in health care policy.
Former chief executive Van Rooyen resigned in May 2005. Dr Poutasi will take over at the beginning of May 2006 from acting chief executive Karen Sewell.
